Senator Polley renewed her call for better community awareness and understanding of dementia this morning at the launch of the ‘Dementia & Sensory Challenges – Dementia is about more than memory’ booklet.
Senator Polley said that the booklet is a fantastic new resource for people living with dementia, their families and their carers.
“It was inspired and written by people living with dementia and helps us look past the most commonly recognised characteristic of dementia – cognitive decline,” Senator Polley said.
“It helps people understand that dementia is more than just memory loss and that people living with dementia also experience a range of sensory changes that impact their day to day life.”
Senator Polley also had the opportunity to meet Queensland man, Greg Kelly who was diagnosed with younger onset dementia and is riding around Australia on his Harley Davidson to raise funds and awareness for those living with dementia.
“I commend Greg for sharing his story with the rest of Australia. We need to do everything we can do raise awareness of dementia so that people living with dementia feel included and supported in their communities, and Greg’s journey is a testament to this.”
