Senator Polley today questioned what the Federal Member for Bass Andrew Nikolic is doing to assist Tamar Valley Dairy, which entered voluntary administration yesterday.
Mr Nikolic has said that he will be a champion for the people of Bass and will create conditions for economic growth and ensure job losses do not occur. Further, Prime Minister Tony Abbott spent countless trips to Tasmania during the federal election campaign to champion Tasmanian jobs.
"How is the Federal member Mr Nikolic going to assist Tamar Valley Dairy in this very disturbing development," Senator Polley said
"Mr Nikolic needs to take responsibility on this issue to try and prevent the 170 people from losing their jobs," Senator Polley said.
Obviously, anything and everything should be done to save this great local company and the workers which rely on this business for their livelihoods.
"We must save these 170 jobs in Northern Tasmania because they are crucial to the local economy and obviously the families of these workers, " Senator Polley said.
"I have been in contact with the State Government, stakeholders including the AWU and with Deloitte spokesman Glen Kanevsky. I believe that government can assist in the process of ensuring Tamar Valley Dairy continues as a viable business. I will be continuing discussions and am willing to meet with stakeholders to secure the best outcome for Tasmanian workers," Senator Polley said.
All levels of government must come together on this issue.
"I implore Mr Nikolic to do what he was elected to do and take action on this issue" Senator Polley said.
