Baby Safe Haven

I am sure you would be aware that there have been several recent cases of baby abandonment in the state of Queensland. The two most recent cases concerned two mothers who abandoned their babies, one in Brisbane on July 28 and the other in Rockhampton on August 1. Due to these latest developments I have written to the Queensland Premier, Campbell Newman to express the need for Baby Safe Havens in his home state. I detailed to the Premier that there exists community support for such an initiative. Dr Christian Rowan, President of the Australian Medical Association of Queensland has expressed support for the idea of safe haven legislation, as part of a broader plan aimed at assisting struggling new mothers. This is an ongoing issue and I remain committed to the task of ensuring Baby Safe Havens exist in this country in the future.

I would urge anyone interested in supporting the establishment of Baby Safe Havens in Australia to sign the petition to the Australian Senate. Signed petitions can be mailed to my electorate office at PO Box 1223, Launceston, TASMANIA, 7250. The petition can be downloaded here
