Abbott Government continues to ignore calls for aged care workforce strategy

Joint media release with the Hon. Shayne Neumann, Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Shadow Minister for Ageing, Member for Blair.

Yesterday the Federal Labor Tasmanian Taskforce met with key stakeholders and experts in aged care to discuss the issues facing Tasmania’s ageing population.

Conversations called for a coherent aged care workforce strategy to ensure the demands of Tasmania’s ageing population are met by an adequately skilled and equipped workforce.

However, another week has passed and the aged care workforce strategy promised over a year ago is still nowhere to be seen.

Other concerns focussed on low wages for aged care workers, the need to attract and retain workers, and a lack of communication with the sector.

Failure to address aged care workforce issues immediately puts older Australians, their carers and the sector at risk.

Labor takes the ageing of our population seriously and we will continue to work with stakeholders, experts and the community to leverage the opportunities ageing presents.

Your move Senator Fifield.
